Sarasota Community Calendar of Events

The Avenue of Art is a free self-guided walking tour open 24/7 of curated hand-painted sidewalks in downtown Sarasota. The artwork celebrates Sarasota County Centennial. Each painting has a QR code for spectators to click on to read about the history of Sarasota County, the artist that painted the artwork, Contributors and more. The tour starts at 500 S. Orange Avenue (intersection of S. Orange and Laurel Street) and continues for 4 blocks.

The teen improv troupe aka “The Teenyboppers” has been bringing laughter to the community since Spring 2019. Improv is a fun, fast-paced art form that requires the actor to think outside of the box. It demands focus, a willingness to listen and engage, and tells a story without the safety net of a script. Join them at the end of each semester for a night of laughs! 2 other performances will be given on Sunday, Nov.20 and Sunday, April 23, 2023.  They will also begin at 7:30.

Selby Gardens’ annual Orchid Show will celebrate the beauty and diversity of orchids by featuring the stunning scientific photography of ourown rare orchid collection. The show will be built around photographs taken by a group of dedicated volunteers for research purposes thatalso stand on their own as fine art. Images are on display in the Tropical Conservatory and the Museum of Botany & the Arts.

A former resident of the Midwest, Marg now calls Florida her permanent home. After a career in the advertising world, she now explores her love of nature and expresses it with the spontaneity of self-taught realistic watercolors and acrylics.   “I have a strong desire to preserve in paintings the beauty of the world around us.”   She creates her paintings in plein-air, or from her photos of Southwest Florida flora, fauna and landmarks. She also paints from her photos taken while traveling in England, Europe and the Caribbean. In addition, Marg offers commissions for paintings from your favorite photos. A member of the Lakewood Ranch Art League, Marg is a Signature member of the  Florida Suncoast Watercolor Society and is an Associate member of the Florida  Watercolor Society. Marg has exhibited in several SW Florida galleries in Sarasota, Bradenton, Pine Island and Naples. Her paintings are included in several national and international collections  and her watercolors are currently in the Island Gallery West, Anna Maria Island, FL. What’s a nice Greek Muse from heaven doing in 1980’s Venice (California)? Romantic roller-skating! Yes, it’s the cult hit musical Xanadu. This hilarious spoof of the Olivia Newton-John movie goes nostalgic on big hair, shoulder pads, leg warmers, ruthless business, and music from the Electric Light Orchestra. Performances on Nov. 18, 19, 21, 29, 30,  Dec .2, 3, 6,  7, 8, 9, 10, 14, 15, 17, 19, 20 will begin at 7:30 pm. Matiness will be held on Nov. 20, 27,  Dec. 4, 11, 18 and will begin at 2:00 pm.

December 12 – Monthly Meeting: Save our Seabirds (SOS) “Rescue, Rehabilitate, Release.”  CEO Aaron Virgin will update us on the history through to current future plans for one of the biggest bird rescue facilities, wild bird learning centers and living museums in Florida. Thank you for your interest in providing public comment to the Sarasota County School Board during the in-meeting Hearing of Citizens section and/or the general Hearing of Citizens section of the upcoming School Board meeting. The School Board is no longer offering the option of submitting either type of Hearing of Citizens public comment via email. Both in-meeting Hearing of Citizens public comment and general Hearing of Citizens public comment must now again be made in-person either during the School Board meeting or after the meeting's adjournment respectively.The opportunity to email public comment was a temporary measure initially put in place at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic as a courtesy to ensure the public's access to the in-meeting Hearing of Citizens section of Board meetings would not be unduly hindered by COVID-19 restrictions (the general Hearing of Citizens section did not exist at the time). As COVID-19 restrictions have been progressively lifting citizens have demonstrated a steadily increasing comfort-level with moving about the community in a variety of ways including attending School Board meetings in-person. Therefore the public comment email address was deactivated.Since the temporary measure of emailing public comments is no longer in effect any emails pursuant to the in-meeting Hearing of Citizens section &ndash sent to all (or individual) School Board members the School Board's administrative assistant the Superintendent and/or any other school district employee(s) &ndash will not be included in that School Board meeting's legal minutes. The general Hearing of Citizens section is not a part of the official School Board meeting. Therefore none of the public's comments made in this section &ndash whether a person delivers comments in-person or attempts to send comments via email &ndash are reflected in a School Board meeting's legal minutes.
