Sarasota's historic district offers visitors an incredible opportunity to become better acquainted with the city's past. Spanning over two miles of walkable city space and featuring a variety of cultural, architectural, and culinary attractions, this area is a must-see for anyone traveling near our Sarasota homes for sale. Let's take a closer look at some of the buildings and businesses that make this area so remarkable.
Arts and Culture
One of the downtown historic district's biggest claims to fame is its arts scene. Even though the buildings here are old, the artistic community is very much alive and thriving.
You can visit the Art Centre Sarasota, home of the Sarasota Art Association, every weekday from 10 AM to 5 PM and on Saturdays from 12 PM to 5 PM. This building offers the city's talented artists a place to showcase their best works to the public. On top of the usual exhibitions and juried shows, the center also offers classes and panel discussions to help community members improve their own artistic skills and further their understanding of the field.
Looking for some live entertainment? You'll find plenty at the Florida Studio Theatre. This venue hosts all kinds of productions, ranging from plays and musicals to improv comedy. It's a fantastic place for a night out, and the historic building that houses these performances is a spectacle in its own right.
You'll love attending concerts and performances at the gloriously grand Sarasota Opera House. Under its sweeping high ceilings and elaborate balconies, you're sure to feel the majesty of this timeless art form. Our real estate agents are always excited when a new show is announced!
Sarasota's historic district also contains many beautiful old buildings showcasing various architectural styles. Some of these sites have even made their way onto the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.
You can observe the hallmarks of the gorgeous Art Deco style in the ornate fixtures and arches of the Kress Building, an old discount storefront built on Main Street back in 1932.
With a slight detour onto S Orange Avenue, you'll find the imposing marble columns of the Federal Building. This colossal structure is an excellent example of the Neoclassical Revival architecture that was popular in Sarasota during the 1930s.
A little further down Main Street, you'll easily spot the distinctive H-shaped design and Mediterranean influences of the Sarasota County Courthouse. This type of design was another favorite back in the 1920s, but its recent revival has made this building look a lot like many of the trendiest new homes available today.
Shopping and Dining
The historic district is full of small shops and restaurants that are well worth a visit.
You can experience sumptuous French fine dining at the Bijou Garden Café, a renowned local restaurant housed in a former gas station. This establishment is run by an award-winning local chef and features a menu that changes with the seasons to showcase the freshest and most flavorful ingredients.
Later in the evening, you can order a few drinks at The Gator Club, the upscale bar and lounge currently occupying the building that was once known as Worth's Block. The building dates all the way back to 1912 and is one of the oldest structures still standing in modern-day Sarasota.

If you've been exploring Sarasota homes for sale, you'll quickly learn about the area's unique connection to the circus industry. The city of Sarasota was the winter home of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus and continues to carry on a rich circus tradition today.
Our real estate agents love sharing the details of the Sarasota area's history and helping new residents connect with the local culture. One of our favorite area attractions is the Circus Ring of Fame.
A Long-Standing Circus Tradition
In celebration of the area's long-standing circus heritage, the Circus Ring of Fame was constructed in St. Armand's Circle in 1987. Each year, the public nominates new potential Circus Ring of Fame inductees. They're voted on by former inductees and members of the global Circus Advisory Council. The winners are honored with a bronze wagon wheel plaque, which is added to the Circus Ring of Fame.
The 2021 winners include "Galaxy Girl" Tina Winn, "King of the Highwire" Nik Wallenda, and circus performers George Carden, Willie Edelson, and the Richter/Casselley Families.
These new inductees will join 150 other members that have been honored each year since the Circus Ring of Fame began. While the induction ceremony is typically scheduled for mid-January each year, the 2021 ceremony has been rescheduled for the first quarter of 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Visit the Circus Ring of Fame
The Circus Ring of Fame is located in the central park in St. Armands Circle. Visitors are free to explore the area, taking time to read the plaques and appreciate these many circus greats. Some of the plaques you'll find there include circus greats P.T. Barnum, John Ringling, and the astounding aerialists, the Flying Wallendas.
Other circus greats that were previously inducted include famous clowns Emmett Kelley and Lou Jacobs, renowned animal trainer Gunther Gebel-Williams, and aerialist Lillian Wetzel.
While you're in the area, you may want to expand the circus experience even further by visiting the Circus Museum, located on the grounds of Sarasota's Ringling Museum. The Ca' d'Zan, which is the stunning former home of circus titan John Ringling and his wife Mable, is also worth a visit. You won't want to miss these exciting and unique local destinations.
About St. Armands Circle
There's a lot to love about visiting St. Armand's Circle! Not only is it home to the Circus Ring of Fame, but it's also one of Sarasota's best places to enjoy an exceptional array of restaurants, retail shops, salons and spas, and more. While the community is a major selling point, life at Lakewood Ranch still starts at home. Lakewood Ranch homes include single-family homes, condos, apartments, town homes and custom-built homes from the best builders in the area. The community is broken down into 15 villages, or neighborhoods, each with its own perks and amenities.
Most villages in Lakewood Ranch are adjacent to at least one golf course and offer beautiful views even if you're not the type to hit the links yourself. There are also age-restricted villages to be found within the community, along with family-friendly villages. Our Lakewood Ranch REALTORS® can help you find a house you'll love in a neighborhood you'll be proud to call home.
The Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club is really three great golf courses in one, each with its own unique personality. Cypress Links, King's Dunes and Royal Lakes are the three 18-hole courses that make up Lakewood Ranch and Country Club. Every course at the club makes use of the gorgeous natural scenery of Lakewood Ranch, and can be enjoyed by golfers of any skill level. The club also offers a host of other recreational activities, and a busy schedule of special events that are always well-attended by the community.
When you live in Lakewood Ranch, winter is little more than a distant memory. Even during the heart of January, you can golf in a short-sleeve polo or go for a cool, comfortable morning jog without bundling up for a blizzard. In addition to great golf, you can enjoy year-round fun at the Premier Sports Campus, the Sarasota Polo Club, and the Ancient Oak Gun Club. Parks, walking trails and scenic hideaways dot the community as well, so there is always something new to explore.
Whether you're purchasing a second home or moving in full-time, Lakewood Ranch offers move-in options to make life a little easier. There are move-in ready homes available in some villages, as well as maintenance-free homes that provide peace of mind throughout your time in Lakewood Ranch. You're also welcome to handle those details yourself, but it's nice to know the all-inclusive option is there if you need it.
Town Centers are the hubs of Lakewood Ranch's villages, where residents go to shop, dine, drink and enjoy an evening out with their neighbors. Neighborhood shopping centers allow you to handle grocery shopping, banking and all of life's little errands without leaving Lakewood Ranch. You'll also find three large, central town centers called San Marco Plaza, Waterside Place, and Main Street, each with its own unique businesses, dining spots, and entertainment options.
